Street Children in Tanzania

During the summer of 2006, Carol and I met Masalakulangwa, an Anglican priest from Tanzania. He stayed at my home in Hiram and became a close friend of ours.

When he was 3 years old, his father died. When he was 5 years old, his mother died. From age 5 through 12 years of age, he was abandoned to the cruel streets of Mwanza, Tanzania, Africa. He bathed in the river and begged for food for 7 years. He has scars from wild dogs and from the police getting rid of the "rif-raf" at the request of local merchants.

He is now 42 years old. He has a Masters degree from the University of Bristol, England. He has a Master’s degree from the University of Texas. In July 2006, he helped present a 7-day World Health Justice Symposium at Hiram College that Carol Ruggie attended.

Masalakulangwa now rescues other homeless and orphaned street children in Tanzania. To date, he has rescued 200 abandoned street children (3 to 16 years of age) placing them in homes within his diocese.

During the summer of 2006, Carol and I gave several speeches at Rotary Clubs around Ohio.  Masalakulangwa accompanied Carol and me on several of these speeches as we tried to raise money for his street children orphans. We did not tell the audience who he was until after we presented our program. What a wonderful way to present him to an audience! They were thrilled to meet him!

Carol was able to raise enough money to sponsor several children.  Let's take a look at Masalakulangwa's children and Carol's hope for the future.

Modeling Future Heroes - A Practical Application of Human Values

Carol and I have spent the past 2 years writing a course of study entitled Modeling Future Heroes and have almost finished the text book of the same name. This course and book are based on the values, leadership, and conflict resolution abilities of world heroes who solved their problems peacefully. It is designed to show how peaceful solutions to conflict and overcoming obstacles can be discovered and utilized. The course is designed to inspire and guide our youth, but is also adopted for corporate and military applications.

The basis of the book Modeling Future Heroes is derived from a 5-year study into the remarkable problem-solving abilities of the Tuskegee Airmen. Carol and I are members of the North Coast Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen in Cleveland. Carol and I opened Black History month by giving a speech at Tuskegee University in February of 2006.

Carol and I went to the Tuskegee Airmen National Convention in Dallas last August.

It was in Dallas, with Carol in a motorized scooter so she could get around, that she met Hiram Mann, one of the most famous Tuskegee Airmen Red Tail pilots. Hiram Mann, also in a scooter, had a drag race with Carol down the long corridors of the convention center.

Could Carol beat a famous WWII fighter pilot in a race? You betcha!

Carol started a Rotary sponsored Tuskegee Airmen book project where various Rotary Clubs can place a collection of 13 Tuskegee Airmen books and videos in school and local libraries so our youth can learn about these inspiring role models. Orders have been placed as far away as Fairbanks, Alaska.

Carol’s dying wish was that I finish our book Modeling Future Heroes, and I promised her that I would.

I am also going to dedicate the rest of my life to continuing all her causes in South Africa, Tanzania, Nicaragua, and Modeling Future Heroes. I will need lots of help.
